A Forecasting Platform User Made $436K on Wagers on Maduro's Downfall.

An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But these probabilities had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on recently seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Insider trading is against the law in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
