An Cooperation of the Senses: Royal Ballet Joins with Visually Impaired Artist for Groundbreaking Fresh Production

The Royal Ballet for years provided headphones with descriptive narration so that sightless patrons could follow the action on stage. Currently, through a innovative production, the whole audience will experience such descriptions within a piece that explores how blindness can transform our perceptions to experience, audio and narrative.

Visually Impaired Artist Works with Renowned Choreographers

The blind artist, a visually impaired professional, is working with Sir Wayne McGregor, alongside other choreographers, and composer Max Richter in creating a recent ballet company production that will launch on November 12th, World Ballet Day, as declared this week.

In her art, Healey is driven by a ambition to illustrate how visual impairment and disability can present an different type of awareness for all people. Her rich spoken descriptions, blended with the composition, forms the center of the performance on stage.

"Creating world-class ballet and opera for each person" is a guiding principle of the Royal Opera House. Under the director, the Royal Ballet's leader, the organization is concentrating on "radical accessibility – encouraging artists and patrons to experience dance in life-changing new ways," he explained.

Multiple Choreographers Work on New Performance

The fresh production is being designed by Tiler Peck, Bim Malcomson, and Rebecca Myles Stewart, in addition to Wayne McGregor, every one collaborating with the blind artist.

The curator, the organizer of this work, stated: "World Ballet Day was created on the concept of access. After a decade, we're expanding that concept more to consider how impaired perspectives can influence our creative medium, and invite viewers of all abilities and experiences to experience dance in new ways."

Having worked with Healey in Canada and Australian locations, he recognized that individuals who can see who had encountered the artist's spoken descriptions felt it assisted them comprehend ballet, which can seem so abstract.

Moving Collaboration Between Professional and Amateur Performers

In a particular dance piece, the company's dancer Leo Dixon will perform alongside Takashi Kikuchi, an amateur dancer who has been sightless from childhood and who had always thought that ballet was "mostly for those who can see". But the dancer has discovered that it truly "entails a lot of feeling and sentiments" and activates senses, "visual and non-visual".

The dancer's personal story of once becoming disoriented on his way home and using the sun to guide his way back had influenced a duet in which Dixon represents the "soothing presence of the sunlight around Kikuchi as they perform as one," the choreographer said.

"This occurred mid-afternoon and I had a feeling that the sun should be beaming from the west. So, if I faced the sunshine, even though I couldn't see the rays itself, I could feel the temperature … So I persisted in walking to the west …. It guided me home. The sun was a excellent helper to me. The sun could be a good representation. So the narrative emerged from there."

Visual Impairment Offers Special Connection with Movement

The blind artist, an academic of disability studies at the Toronto university, said: "Visual impairment and lacking sight invites a active bond with motion in a way that is comparable to a expert performer's connection with their physical self and movement."

In collaborating with the dancers, she was attempting to express what "they feel in their physical being, something that’s just not accessible through vision," she said. "I talk with the performers to get a sense of how they feel in their physical self, where their respiration is, what they think, how their physical form are experiencing.

"In collaboration with the choreographers [and] attire, lighting, set and sound creators, the viewpoints and artistry of blindness are always there as we, visually impaired and sighted individuals, establish a rapport through our affection of movement and dance. It is this artistry and affection that I attempt to blend into the detailed narration. It is a collaboration of the faculties guided by blindness."

She noted: "Even though the vision of the performance, the beautiful visual feast, is available in front of the viewers, there is a great deal that they overlook or appreciating, and it is blindness that is inviting sighted and visually impaired viewers equally into the invisible. What I wish is that, when audience members leave, they sense ballet in a new way, and they’re also feeling the being, and listening to the perceptions of, blindness in new and vibrant ways."

Musician The Composer on Audio Descriptions

Richter, whose works have amassed more than billions of streams, said the spoken narration formed a rapport between visual impairment and sight "by means of a audio environment, giving voice to that which is not always visible". He noted: "This isn't simply a explanation of a production. It is performance."

World Ballet Event Partners

The company's worldwide collaborators for World Ballet Day feature the Canadian ballet company and the Australian dance troupe. The troupes will furthermore offer entry to backstage material, rehearsals and newly commissioned works – streamed in real-time via their official platform.
