Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
