British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
