Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final moments to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
