New research reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
