Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the option to contest specific decisions made by the official, echoing the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
